Uno de los pioneros de la revolución marginalista. Desarrolló el concepto de productividad marginal y el "agotamiento del producto". Uno de los primeros marginalistas americanos, se opuso a la escuela institucionalista, convirtiéndose así en objeto predilecto de los ataques de Veblen. En cambio su hijo, John Maurice Clark, se convirtió en un destacado institucionalista.
